2009 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions

September 11, 2009

Goodwin champions comes out on the 15th and it looks like it will be awesome enough for me to buy some for review, I am not putting it on hold till the price goes down, like topps chrome and allen and ginter, instead I am going to get it as soon as I have extra money, so expect that in the next two monthes. It looks pretty awesome, which is good, the only bad thing is that there is no torii hunter card of any sort in this product, it might be because torii is having a great year aside from injuries and he is charging more for autographs and jerseys, but upper deck isn’t paying because they don’t see him as a superstar player, even though he is. It comes with 1 autograph and 2 jerseys per box at about 60 cents a card which is a little expensive, but still affordable, wou also get 1 mini per pack an there are some strange case hits. The autograph checklist looks great and the design looks pretty good. There are lots of yankee base from this year and historic players.  Not much more to say, but it looks like a good product and I will be getting a box, if I really like it I will get more, if not I will start working on a box of either 2007 Masterpieces or topps chrome. I will be reviewing the two boxes of 2008 masterpieces on 9/18/09, that is a week from today

2009 Topps vs Upper Deck

September 8, 2009

Today I will be comparing 2009 Topps series 2 and upper deck series 2. From the very beginning I have been faithful to upper deck, because in my mind they have been so much better, this may be because the only topps product I have ever opened is 10 dollars worth of topps retail series 2 packs. I would have to say the topps design is cheesy and trying to be simple and good while in reality it looks worse than previous years of topps flagship, the topps chrome looks like a good product and I will most likely be getting a box for christmas or next year during the topps exclusive, but as for topps series 2 I would say upper deck is far superior. The upper deck desing is magically simple with nice action shots and fun to open packs with scattered inserts and some decent game used jerseys and autos, topps has fine inserts but the etopps deal is bad, if they got rid of that and made it all legends of the game and ring of honor and stuff it would be better, the relics aren’t good and the relics need work.

Topps series 2 overall rating: C+

Upper Deck series 2 overall rating: B-

The Masterpieces review will be delayed for about a week because I just ordered another box along with some other little goodies from www.dacardworld.com. They have amazingly good priced boxes and they are very reputable, I buy all my boxes from them, please check them out if you haven’t already.

2009 Upper Deck Artifacts A Piece of History Review

September 4, 2009

What I am basically doing here is comparing the retail/hobby versions of the same product and giving recomendation and overall grades on both.

Deisgn: B-

The design isn’t good, but it isn’t as bad as last year, and if you try to understand and like this set you will kind of get into the theme and it will be enjoyable. The parallels look pretty lame and are just a different colored border with a serial number stamped on in the middle, kind of nice to collect but I would definately use them as trade bait, good thing about this product is the fun to collect base set, 200 cards is a little difficult but I am only one card away. If anyone has card 156 please email me asap. Also noteable is the insert sets, timeless moments, stadium scenes, franchise members 3/4 and so on, these are fun to collect, but they do have an ugly team logo where it is obvious the design is meant for a relic, that being said the relics are pretty good.

Price: B

At around 50 dollars including shipping you get around 120 cards, at least 10-20 insert/parallels one memorbilia card, one auto (I am pretty sure they are all rookie autos, though this is not advertised as one way or the other on the sell sheet), and one piece of hollywood memorbilia card.

(Retail) Price: C+

At 20 dollars at your local retail store you get 35 cards, and one memorbilia card on average plus a small handful of retail exclusive red parallels, which are the only parallels you will be finding in the retail version (artifacts) of this product, you may also get some low numbered inserts, I got a jermain dye timeless moments /75.

Hits/pulls piece of history (hobby): B

The card definately appear to be designed for jerseys which is good, this product is indeed responsibl for getting rid of some extra jerseys as I pulled all grey jerseys including my 3 color patch grey/white/navy. The piece of hollywood relics were clearly bought and made just for this set, so it is not like this product is just to dump out old grey jerseys. The hits I got were

5 rookie autos including an aaron cunningham and jesus delgado/ 99 both blue ink (purple background is not the best idea upper deck has ever come up with)

joey votto timeless moments /180 grey

Dan Uggla Franchise history /180 !!!!BLACK!!!! Sick black jersey which maks me think piece of histoy has some hope.

Jake Peavy timeless moments three color patch 01/25 Cool hit especially since it is an ebay 1/1

Piece of hollywood: Sean Penn and Rachael McAdams

My Boxes (hobby): B+

You gotta give a timeless moments jake peavy patch 01/25 some credit

Hits/pull (retail): B-

I got a john smoltx timeless moments /180 and a chris carpenter stadium scenes which is a cool card but it is not numbered, I think it is the most common version of that card.

Overall if you are going to get this product I would say definately get the hobby version, and then if you like it which some people might really like this set then there are some nice patches and patch autos and chase cards which you can go after, The arnold shnanorksneiger or however you spell it lol goes for around 30-50 dollars on the secondary market so that might pay for another box if you don’t want it.

Overall: B-

If you think you might like this product then I would grab a box, if not then there is really no point for you to get it.

2009 Upper Deck Spectrum Review

September 2, 2009

Hi guys, here is my first review, 2009 Upper Deck Spectrum. I don’t really know why I bought this, more because I was curious than anything else. Before I start I will say I will not be buying more of these but I am happy with what I got. I ended up pulling 57 base, 3 parallels, 1 jersey, 1 jersey auto, 1 spectrum of stars auto, and 1 buyback auto. The base design looks pretty good in my mind but the purple ruins it. If it had been a green, blue, or black I probably would have bought at least another box of these. They did a good job with the parallels, I got a green jimmy rollins 20/99 which is pretty sweet along with a dan haren and a dan uggla both numbered to 250. I do like it when the base sets ar eonly 100 cards because then you only get good players. Unfortunately I did not get the Torii hunter card so I am a little disapointed with that. The backs of the cards are nice with a short and sweet summary of the player and a sharp design. Now for the hits. The jersey I got was a John Smoltz #/99. John Smoltz isn’t that good anymore and the jerseys in spectrum are tiny. I couldn’t really care more or less about it. The card that pretty much made my box was the Evan Longoria Jersey Auto 7/10. The fact that a card numbered to 10 is a sticker auto is somewhat ridiculous but it is on straight and the card looks great. The card probably paid for my 55 dollar box right there. The Spectrum of Stars autos are pretty much failures. They are sticker autos of people know one has ever heard of  and they are doing bad on the secondary market. Mine was of matt prokop, a star in high school musical 3 and hannah montana. This is pretty pathetic. I don’t think anyone would want that card, especially not me. The last hit I got was a n autographed buyback of Dave Conception from 2001 upper deck legends. The acual card is only worth 15 dollars book value, but since I have the buyback version it is probably worth more, it is still an awesome looking on card auto of famous shortstop for the reds dave conception, I heard they even retired his number 13 2 years ago.

All the cards are for trade except for the longoria and conception.

The Grand Opening of Torii and Cardboard

September 2, 2009

Welcome everyone. As you can imagine I am a torii hunter fan, and I love baseball cards. I have been in the hobby for about six monthes and have opened a few boxes over that time which I will review for my readers (If any) shortly.
